Not sure what vintage of 9-3 you're replacing, but if it's the OG93 hatchback, take a look at the Focus ST.
Test drove one as possible future replacement for me Viggen.
Felt very similar. Felt very slightly smaller, especially in rear seat and cargo areas. But it's a handy 5 door. And the 252hp turbo pulled very much like the Viggen. Optional Recaro seats are seriously firm, very nice. Handling is where the ST really shines and frankly the Viggen wouldn't have a prayer of keeping up on a twisty road.
Overally the Focus felt suprisingly solid, quiet, upscale. And mpg is good even on the ST.
