Strong advice. The timing belt and related work on the A4 are not a big deal. But the suspension on those cars - especially the Quattros - is a killer. Very expensive, very labor intensive. Also, if that A4 is an automatic I would run away. The ZF 5-speed is not a long-lived slushbox. If it's a manual, I'd not be all that worried.
The Jetta by comparison is a much simpler car, although engine work on the transverse VR6 can be a pain. Lots of moving parts in a pretty small area.
Gotta be honest, I would not expect either of these cars to hit 300k, at least not without serious, serious work. The reason these cars get very very cheap after 150k is because maintenance costs start to skyrocket and few people want to put that kind of money into them. Personally, I would not plan on having either of these cars for more than 50,000 miles at most.
