Re: Volvo S60 2.5T - Aisin Warner 5sp Auto - fluid Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Volvo S60 2.5T - Aisin Warner 5sp Auto - fluid, Steve T., Thu, 23 May 2013 13:47:40 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
In 06, Volvo started to use the 6 speed TF80 transmission. As always since they can't have the same name, Saab calls their 6 speed AF40 and is installed in the V6 Aero from 06 and up.
Essentially it is the same transmission with probably some specialty quirks inside that only the white coat labrats at Saab and Volvo knows about.
One quirk is that Volvo decided to keep going with the Mobil 3309 fluid in their 6 speed but Saab decided to come out with a new and fantastic fluid called AW-1. I have not found a substitute for the AW-1 yet and I don't dare to use the 3309 in the Saab's since some of them still have the power train warranty going.
It is a little bit more cumbersome changing the fluid since it is no dipstick per see but a fluid level plug and tube that has to be removed.
To make it easier on me I drain the fluid into a measuring container and add the same amount of new fluid back into the transmission so there is less need to mess around with that level plug.
BMW has also had a leveling plug for many years and they also state that their fluid is filled for life but as all others refuse to put a time stamp on what "life" is.
I guess from my perspective thinking along the line using my simple farmer brain, when something croaks, that's the life of it. So they might be right in that the fluid is filled for "life".
I want to start as early as possible changing the fluid by the drop and drain method and I don't think it is wrong starting at 30K since the fluid is already pretty dark coming out.
When you keep doing that at every 30K interval, the fluid seems to stay healthier and the next drain at 60K doesn't look too bad and then at 90 it is also pretty good.
My main argument for changing transmission fluid and other fluids too is that if you don't do it and the transmission croaks, you kick yourself when the shop say you should have changed the fluid.
If you change the fluid and the transmission croaks, you can at least say that you did as best as you could IF? the shop knew what they were doing and used the right fluid. The whole cost spread over time is not really that much for the fluid change.
