My last Jetta was a 1997 Trek and before that a 1989 GL. My only issue with the Jetta is size. I feel like I can get a Passat for just a few grand more and it would fit the family better. The only reason that its on the list is for the reasons you mentioned -- gas mileage is great.

With a Diesel is it hard finding pumps? Thats always been my concern. Is it sluggish. My last memory of a Diesel car was a Mercedes in the 80s. It smelled bad and was slow.
