They have 4 kids and like the pilot. It looks like an SUV but I'm pretty sure it is basically just a raised minivan platform so it apparently does not drive like a truck. They are not super long though, so I'm not sure how much space there is behind the 3rd row for gear. The downside though for you looking used is that they really do not depreciate significantly - it doesn't save much vs buying new... kind of like the Jeeps. It is possible the odyssey is similar in that regard? Both are quite popular.
Mazda 5 has 3 rows, but the back row is very tight and very close to the hatch. I know others are less concerned about this, but after Swedemurphy's rear ended minivan photo, I wouldn't put my kids back there - just not much crumple room.
As a wacky curveball, have you seen the Tesla S? It has a rear jumpseat iirc. Kind of cool, but probably not actually practical for a family of 6!
I've told my wife that if we ever had 4 kids we'd be driving 2 saabs everywhere. No way am I buying a minivan. So far that has kept our numbers manageable!
good luck!
