Ok, so I was still having some pinging problems with my 3.0 bar FPR and other mods. I borrowed a timing light from a friend, but gave up on that venture because my eyes aren't good enough to see the darn numbers/marks on the flywheel. Anyhow in the process, I rotated the distributor before marking it, and put it back as well as I could remember. Found out today though, that I must have advanced the timing, because it was pinging like crazy at any boost over 10 psi. (about 60F out today) And it was already at 17 BTDC.

So, just for fun today, I retarded it a little bit. Hard to say how much, by the marks I made from where it was, maybe five degrees of dist. rotation, if that. WOW!! What a difference! All of a sudden, the pinging was GONE, and now I am getting the highest boost ever, 16-17 psi, and it's SOLID. Amazing what such a tiny turn of the distributor does, eh?

I'll admit though, it feels much more sluggish around town, well anywhere below about 10 psi boost, really. Still damn fast, but it doesn't feel light footed like it did when the timing was too advanced (man that felt lightning quick around town).

So, looks like the moral is, the A.I.D. is calling my name... As I understand it, it will do exactly what I need - allow me to set higher advance for great low end and low boost conditions, but give the extra retard at higher boost levels to keep that boost high and steady.

May just have to order one up tomorrow! I'll see 20 psi yet!
