I thought that I read something many years ago about the timing chain case sticking out more than on the 2.0L. It was an article about a major Saab rally modified vehicle. So perhaps a space problem there.
The 2.0L engine ECU might not like the 15% larger displacement. The speed-density system measures absolute manifold pressure with the MAP sensor and then caculates air flow by MAP signal and RPMs. The base air flow mixture would then be 15% lean before adaption started to adapt, but the adaption amount might trigger an out of bounds type CEL. And when on boost, the mixture is open loop and not using adaption and then might be lean and detonate. If the fuel pressure were increase 15%, then things might be fine.
Don't know about when T5 started in the 9K.
What kind of title does the 1995 have? Something that can be titled and insured?
The dash lights could be the ignition switch or a harness bundle chaffing on a metal part behind the cluster. If the former, that can also involve engine shutdowns. If the black panel button does not work, perhaps its connector is discon behind.
