The T5 is almost impossible to make knock.
The T5 with a MBC+A or MBC works very well. But one really needs to reduce intake and exhaust restrictions, and a better IC is good too. Those recommendations should also be followed with all ECU mods as well.
We have not had any reports of knocking or damage with a T5 & MBC/MBC+A. Yes, there is a theoretical concern, but in reality things work very well. Everyone is advised to use the best pump gas octane available. Perhaps a MBC at high altitudes where pump octane is low would not be a good idea. Keep plugs and injectors in good condition and use M1 oil and certainly an xW40 oil for a mature engine with greater running clearances.
The T5 does not have a knock sensor, the DIC detects conditions conducive to knocking and the ECU plays with enrichment and timing and only reduces boost as a last resort. Reducing boost is not a routing activity on a high output modded engine.
Another rule of thumb is never to increase boost on an engine that is not well maintained or in good mechanical condition.
We went through quite a debate/battle about these issues when I reported that I installed a MBC in 199?8. Many forcast that engines would explode, but why only Saab engines? All worked out very well. Those who spent $$$ on Abbott ECU mods were the most vocal and outraged. Now the community recognizes that there is a choise and distinct advanges to a MBC+A or an ECU mod. The T7 system put a cap on what vehicles could work with a MBC.
A MBC+A is a MBC with an anticipator, which is a low-pressure sensitive air pressure regulator in parallel with the BPC. A kit can be had. Email if you are interested and I will let you know where these can be found. (I do not make these or sell them)
