Also, assess each modification, but plan for the next..

Some modifications can negate others, so be sure all integrate well, and work toward your goal.

Typically when I do mods, I have, as bryan mentions, a set goal and if the budget won't all all at once, do one, see what if any improvement there is, then move on to the next.

The key to higher performance is the ability to move air (and fuel, of course), so breathing is key.

First step, IMHO, is a less restrictive exhaust -- several tuner/providers are available there.

Cone filters are a personal preference item to me. I've tried it, but found that the placement behind the intercooler actually inhibited performance. Some cut the inner fender to get cold air. I prefered not cutting metal.

There is a cool and cheap mod that I did was on the boost control solenoid insert a check valve (one from the window washers, of all things works well) in the input from the manifold. What this does is delays the wastegate from opening, i.e. holds boost up between shifts. May not be a huge improvement on an automatic transmission, but it's cheap, and won't hurt.

Another mod you should consider if you do anything with the turbo, is modify fuel delivery. Ideally, all engines at idle and at cruising should be stoichametric, or 14:1 air to fuel ratio. So as you add air, the car's ecu doesn't compensate well. So, depending on model year, you can adjust the AMM either by adjusting the potentiometer on early models to 300 ohms, or on later models that don't have an adjustible AMM, add a 300 ohm resister in line.

I've added 30 lb/hr injectors from Ford Motor (mustang injectors, basically), and also a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. At idle, the FPR is at 2.5 bar, at WOT it's 5 bar. I also have a air/fuel meter in the dash so I can monitor any changes I make.

Beyond the bolt-on tricks, you can then do thinks like a larger front mount Intercooler, and ultimately an aftermarket or modified ECU. Jak Stol has a fantastick pacakge for both.

Just a couple of tips, and as they say, "your mileage may vary". Everyone tries something a bit different from the next, but generally it's all about better breathing.

Hope this helps.
