I had seen a C900 turbo for the first time in the lot by the quad at college. At that time, a spanking new black '81 turbo. Meanwhile, a friend of my dad's was selling his '74 99LE. Dad, in a fit of midlife crisis, bought the beast, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Dad, also being a car nut (he used to drag race and rally in the '60's and '70's) and I have always believed in getting as much as you can possibly afford, often stretching that limit. I certainly don't want you to go into debt, but if you *have* to have a C900 (I have to -- sold my '88 and a dearly want it back!), the later the better, generally speaking. For two reasons: generally less miles, thus less wear and tear, also you'll be getting the latest updates of the car. Work backwards from there until you can afford. Worry about the performance upgrades later -- they will come in time and as the budget can allow.
They are great cars. Otherwise I wouldn't have driven them for 20 years, right?
Good luck, and Happy Saabing!
