Tradeoffs involved in bigger wheels

I'm waiting delivery on my 9-3 Arc (16 inch wheels standard), and one of the few modifications I'd like to make eventually are bigger brake calipers, which of course would involve bigger wheels.
What are some of the tradeoffs involved in upsizing your wheels? Are there a lot of other things that must be adjusted when you do (speedometer, shocks/springs, etc.)? Are 17" wheels a kind of happy medium, or would most of you go up to 18" as well?
I'm pretty limited in my car knowledge, and a total Saab newbie as well, so be gentle :)
