Hey, I'm in calif also. I have the SD blue injectors, 3 bar FPR, SD RRFPR, and SD APC box. No problem meeting smog since they test only at 25 mph. I'm just concerned with the smog tech asking me, "Hey, what is that shiny round thing there?" Oh, that's my RRFPR. "Oh, ya, where is your CARB sticker?"... I'll just play dumb first.
If you are going for more hp, you will need to increase your boost. MBC or tweeked APC? Tweeked APC is certainly safer. If you increase boost, you WILL need larger injectors. 24# injectors are fine for up to 230 HP. If I could go back, I wouldn't get a RRFPR, but have JAK rechip the LH box. You'll need to first get it dynoed with AFR and AMM data logged. If you do get a RRFPR, what I understand you just need the stock 2.5 bar FPR.
The problem with the 88 gearbox is that it has the old style pinion bearing. I upgraded my trany to a 89 gearbox with the larger pinion bearing. Seems to be working out ok. If your trany is still good, I would look at having a shop install the larger pinion before it's too late.
The other things that really increased low end torque was increasing the timing to 19 deg. I run the stock vacuum retard which probably keeps me from running higher boost but I also installed a water injection system and inject alot of water very early.
Email me and I'll sell you my setup so I can get Jaks chip!
