The newer 2.0's have balance shafts anyway...but as far the motors being more durable thats simple not true, they are both very durable...its not until you get to the t7 cars that use lightweight pistons that aren't nearly as strong.
As far as balance shafts being a no-no for high output...that depends, if you want to spin your engine much faster than it was originally intended, you may want to remove them or if you are looking to free up every last bit of HP then yeah sure, but there are plenty of high powered 2.0/2.3 with balance shafts...
