The HL designation applies to the center section diameter of the Volvo and Saab versions. Not sure of it also applies to the Subie countepart, but there are enough variations with that one to rule it out.

The Volvo version is very desireable variation because, depending on the year and compressor wheel size, it will come with a 6cm2 or 7cm2 exhaust housing size. The 6cm2 is preferable if you're using a 15T or 16T wheel; going to an 18T will require clipping. The 7cm2 housing is best matched with the 19T wheel....

The Volvo uses a different compressor and exhaust housing than the 94-98 9000, a T3 vs. T25 flange. You can have a T3 to T25 adapter plate welded onto exhaust manifold, which is what I did to fit a Volvo TD04HL-16T to my NG900. Spools VERY quickly, and has more top end than the 15T. ATP turbo makes a flange adapter that seals the odd recessed circle on the Volvo's exhaust port.

The TD04HL-15T from a 9000 Aero uses a T25 flange pattern and will bolt up to your manifold. You will need to adjust the line placement for any new TD04
