heres how I see it Posted by jak [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: best procedure to seal new rings, steveC, Sat, 11 Mar 2006 20:04:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Im sorta in between on the break in thing
I sont think a fresh engine sould be left to idle much at all I also dont think they should be babyed
the oil splashing up from the crank helps cool things & seat the rings so I fire it up & check for leaks & whatnot
then I take it out & drive normaly not realy hard but hard not 20 lbs of boost but will rev over 4500RPM mabey take it out on the highway a bit
over the next couple of days I drive it a little harder & a little harder by like the third day Ill do full boost WOT pulls
you do want to get on it durring break in to push the rings out against the cylinder walls for sure but on a turbo car with the boost up you could hurt things so mabey lower the boost a bit durring break in
if the ring end gaps are not to tight you wont have any trouble if they are set tight you will score the crap out of a cylinder walls
dave from group9 or brad may have better info on ring gap but I think the top ring gap is a lil tighter then the second so the top (if steel chrome) would be like .008 & the second & oil rings might be like .015
I could be rong on that & on my own engines I dont think I checked that because I trust the federal mogul bearings I used on the classic but on carls car & other customers I measured each ring in the cylinder before installing them & call my machinist to ask for ring gap specs
thats my 2 cents
take care
