Well you'll probably get a range of responses on this.

Basically the ECU adaptation uses feedback from the O2 sensor. It starts out injecting "x" amount of fuel, then looks at the O2 for a rich/lean indication (the O2 sensor output is functionally digital and only gives those two indications - there's no "just right", nor does it tell how much it's lean or rich). If O2 says "rich" the ECU adjusts the injection amount down slightly and checks again. If it's "lean", it adjusts upward. This process goes on continuously, and different adjustment factors are stored for different combinations of engine temp, manifold pressure, RPM, etc.

The problem is, the adaptation range is limited, and is only intended to compensate for things that happen in a stock car, like engine wear, sensor tolerances, small injector variations, etc.

By installing larger injectors, you run the risk of running out of adjustment range, especially if something else in the engine is near its tolerance limit. If this happens, the mixture will no longer be right. You'll get a CEL, and if your state does emissions testing it's quite possible the car will fail.

Bottom line, IHMO it's better just to bite the bullet and get an ECU that's set up correctly for the injectors you're using.
