You are on the right track. At idle, with no pressure being developed by the turbo, your bleed opening will be subjected to a small vacuum that is equal to the pressure drop across the intake system. This is a very small pressure difference. With a ball and spring device, the check valve action is built it.
You are hitting the fuel cut. The boost indicator is just that, an indicator. With the enhanced bleeders (ball and spring), the boost will come on much faster than with your arrangement. What you are doing also has the ECU playing with the pressures at the same time.
