I have an Apex autotimer. Mostly because its a small combo volt/02sensor gauge i could mount in the central instrument cluster. My brother had it laying around, so i used it. If either the brake is not set, or the car is in reverse the timer will not function!
Apexi says: with ign on, make sure the parking brake wire reads 0v when the parking brake is up, and 12v when it's down.
So if you tap into the parking brake warning switch on the instrument-cluster side of the switch you get 12v when the brake is not set, otherwise ground. And if you tap into the reverse lamp switch on the lamp side of the switch, you also get 12v when the reverse lamps are on.
Use a pair of electronics diodes to combine the two leads, so the 12v can get to the timer, but the reverse light power wont short out to your brake switch, and your brake being on won’t make the reverse lights glow.
