By adding the helper spring, you are increasing base boost. Watch for pressure spikes, maybe in cold weather only. A stiffer spring increases the time constant for the WGA to open things up.
One can leave the WGA adjustment in a stock state and use a SMBC to achieve the same base boost changes. The WGA spring rate remains unchanged and the WGA's slew rate or time constant is not changed.
On some models, WGA adjustements are not easy, and repeated changes and hot turbos can be an issue. A SMBC can be removed very quickly if need be and the system then is in a stock condition.
A SMBC can also decrease boost lag to a greater degree than a helper spring.
