I typically don't do a flush on any engine w/sludge. But what dean had mentioned w/the head showing you the sign's is true. Also when it is off check out the timing chain for irregular stretching. I see that alot, one side of the chain will stretch furhter than the other causing it to look as if it's moving from one cam gear to the other at an angle.
Removing the pan and cleaning and altering the sump pick-up screen is always a good idea. I never leave the original screen in there. The holes are just to small. A little bit of syn. amsoil Dexron 3 w/the Syn. Motor oil is what i run personally in all my saabs, and my wifes honda.. my engines internally stay very sludge free and very clean.. i don't advise it if you have sludge issue's already though.
