If there is a drain plug and it is like on my '85s there is a round plug towards the backish of the transmission, about an inch diameter, and has a square 3/8ths ratchet socket in it to take it out. It is steel and is easy to find. If you have only a circular protrusion in the casting then you don't have the drain plug and have to remove the differential cover. Pretty much all the oil will come out if you have the car jacked up, and then you should probably put on a new diff cover gasket, although you might be able to get away with using some gasket compound if you can get the old gasket all off in one piece, a feat in itself, as they tend to be that paper construction and come apart when you take the cover off. When you have the cover off if you have a retrieval magnet for nuts and bolts and stuff 'swab' out the floor of the transmission nice and good to get all the shavings.
