On my last two Saabs I've used Hakkpalitta snow tires and absolutely loved them. I'd look forward to driving in clean white snow, putting the car into a controlled slide. I'd smile when I passed Jeep Cherokee's and other SUVs as they tried to climb snow covered hills in ski country. I'd also steer through corners and stop when theose same SUVs would just coast on through (and sometimes roll over).

Perhaps I have a bit of an anti-SUV slant, but I really mean 4 wheel drive. Ultimately without good tires, 4 wheel drive systems are just gas guzzlers. I think lots of folks buy them so they can avoid snow tires....big mistake. All cars have 4 wheels and 4 sets of brakes. Point being, without good tires an SUV can only get you into troube faster. They can't stop faster. They can't steer better (not always true I guess).

Performance oriented driving....heck, all driving is about tires. That's the connection to good old mother earth and traction is the word. Go for snow tires in the winter and perforamnce tires in the summer for the best and safest driving. I bought my Viggen in February last year and it came with brand new all-season tires.....frightening to say the least!

Before buying my Viggen (I was getting desperate for one and started to consider other cars) I drove an S4 and a WRX Sti to find them not as powerful as their specs. suggest and was disappointed. It wasn't until a friend pointed out how much power is lost by the 4 wheel drive system and how the efficiency of one system differs from another. Lost power = wasted fuel = $$$....not to mention repair bills for all the added moving parts.

That said, sometimes 4 wheel drive makes sense depending on your needs (trailer towing, hills, etc.) but using the right tires always makes sense.

My opinionated opinion.
