It's a Hall sensor set-up with a 2-hole shutter wheel. The correct cylinder gets spark by virtue of the rotor position in the cap.

If you're going to do wasted spark, you can't use the 2.1 wheel, but you can use an early DI/APC wheel, which has a third slot to identify TDC. I believe it goes on with minor mods to the holes.

You need an oil pump cover that can accommodate the Hall sensor (all c900s from, IIRC, mid-89, have the holes for it).

Later Trionic Saabs use a VR sensor reading a shutter wheel bolted to the crank. It's inside the engine.

You could do a missing-tooth wheel, too; see http://www.msefi.com.

Another option is to run a VR sensor on the flywheel teeth. Requires filing down one tooth a bit. See http://www.msefi.com for more info; specifically, look up what Audi and Porsche guys are doing, as some of these models' OEM system counted flywheel teeth.
