I decided to tune my 97 9000CSE auto this spring with a performance target of 300hp & 330fpt, having second thoughts on the high torque, given it is an automatic. My goal is to hit the local race track, learn about mechanics, and have the fastest Saab in Calgary :-)
Mods to date:
- K&N filter, with four 1” holes drilled in the intake box
- JSP T25/28 turbo
- JSP 3” SS downpipe with sport cat
- Turbo XS blow off valve
- Washed clean inside of intercooler and intake lines with generic kitchen degreaser (worked great)
- Rear control arm polyurethane bushings
- Stabiliser bar polyurethane bushings, front and back
- Top engine mount polyurethane bushing (1 of 2)
The JSP hardware made a dramatic improvement, and they really elevated my desire to get this project completed ASAP.
Planned mods:
- remainder of exhaust, 2.5”(SD), if necessary 3”(JSP), but I really don’t want it to get loud in the cabin or outside
- JSP software upgrade
- Nordic springs, I think they are progressive, to make the ride a bit easier
- Koni adjustable shocks
- Front strut brace bar
- Wheel and tire package, icing on the cake :-)
My current problem is that the car is stalling and has a hard time keeping idle when the engine bay gets hot, on a hot sunny day. However on a cool day, or till something overheats, the car runs great, smooth idle, smooth acceleration, and loads of power, with the boost gage going deep into the red.
When it’s cool out I can easily go 30km without any problems. When it’s hot and sunny I can have problems in 5 to 10km into the drive. It throws the Check Engine light, with code P0300, random multiple misfire. I have made a few posts on the 9000 postings with some good suggestions but still no solution.
I have changed the CPS twice, swapped the DI, ECU, MAP, air intake temp sensor, cleaned some grounds, and took it to the dealer twice, with no improvement in the condition.
I have learned a lot studying this problem, and now picked up some posts that have excellent pointers on these symptoms. They have identified a couple more grounds to clean, and convinced me to by a volt reader. Now I just have to figure out how to use it. I have on order a throttle position sensor, Engine temp sensor and a sender, fuel pressure regulator, and a new air intake temp sensor. My wife drives a 97 9000CDE so a few spare sensors are probably not a bad idea.
Well, that is the end of my rant/story, if you made it this far, thanks for reading it all. Any thoughts on the problem or mods are appreciated.
