Viggen, Cobalt, 9000 gears, real world experience, long Posted by MTAERO [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I curently am driving both a 99 Viggen with a Quaife LSD and a shorter fifth gear that makes it exactly the same as the Cobalt Gearbox. I did the changes about a year ago.
I also drive a 9000 Aero with a Quaife LSD with a shortened final drive to the 4.05 ratio. I have been driving this box for over 5 years.
I doubt anyone has had as much direct experience driving the subtily different gear boxes.
Remind you the only difference is a 5% lower 3rd gear in the Viggen. Otherwise both of my gearboxes have exactly the same ratios and final drive.
3rd gear in the Viggen/Cobalt gearbox is closer to second and hence further from 4th by exactly the same amount.
Most of you will feel the lower third is great, because driving around town 3rd gear RPM's are 5% higher. Also for fast autocross courses you might use third a little more effectively.
However... on a road course or a drag strip the lower third is not in the right place. Now the 3rd to 4th shifts produce more RPM drops. In this regard the transmission in my aero has more uniform ratios.
Now some make an input shaft with a taller first gear and I will be upgrading both of my boxes.
