Well, crap - new turbo time... Posted by Justin VanAbrahams [Email] ![]() ![]() |
My SPG has like 60,000 miles on it. When I bought it, someone had thoughtfully disconnected the wastegate actuator vacuum line, so it was all boost all the time. I fixed that, but apparently it took it's toll on the poor little Mitsubishi, because I think it died.
The car has been making what you might describe as a grinding noise for the past five hundred or so miles. That's 500 miles done over about six months. I thought maybe it was some belt driven accessory, so I removed them all and went for a quick drive around the block, but the noise was still present. I started thinking perhaps the timing chain... but...
Yesterday while doing some other work I noticed the turbo housing itself looked darker than normal, like oil has been spilled on it. I blamed it on a leaky valve cover gasket (though there was no oil dripping...). I went for a quick drive to test the A:F meter I'd reinstalled, and when I came back the turbo was smoking pretty thoroughly, and looked even wetter.
I think an internal oil seal failed, because it's just external smoke with no obvious signs of anything leaking. The exhaust looks/smells fine too.
Dead turbo sound right? It would explain the grinding noise.
Current wisdom on replacements? damien is running a Super 60 and has been happy with it, but T3/T4 hybrids are more readily available. Another possibility would be a spare turbo from my XR4Ti - it's a T3 with a 63 a/r.
I know I could just rebuild it, but I figure as long as it's coming out, something better might as well go back on... :D
