I don't think it is reasonable to say that using the body for a ground is not safe. The vast majority of production cars use the body as the ground!
While there are some minor arguments against using the body as ground (mainly the corrosion of earth points, leading to electrical gremlins), on the whole, it is a totally safe, and very sensible practice. Particularly so if going all the way from the front to the back of a big car.
