Rehab an '84 900T ...Budget Suggestions (long)

Hope folks can be of help. We've got a project going to rehab an '84 C900 Turbo 8 valve that's had a small engine compatment fire due to a cooling fan overheating, melting the fan housing which caught on fire when it hit the exhaust :( The good news is that its mostly burnt wiring and a couple of other minor things. Insurance paid off, bought the beast back for salvage value. It ran very well and strong prior to the "flameout", and I've got a few $$ beyond the cost of repair to put into it.
Right now, the rest of the car is actually quite nice....new clutch and axles, motor was redone about 30k ago, gearbox rebuilt etc. Exhaust is 2.25 cat back w/freeflow muffler...also almost new.
Thinking of going bracket racing with it, and then on to the Grassroots Motorsports $2007 challenge since its not going to be worth anything to anybody other than me when its repaired, as with the settlement the title went salvage.
Since most of the postings relate to getting max h.p. out of the 16v motor, they aren't real helpful, since I'm really looking to get consistent, repeatable, output out of an 8v, rather than max hp and torque. A "soft" low rpm output is fine, as I'd like to keep the gearbox in one piece. Any suggestions on what we ought to do? After the repair and some paint, there's about $900 left.
