Ed,
I'm in the same boat right now as I'm trying to figure out what to do with my '87 900s. I've spent a lot of time talking to people about performance mods, ported heads, cams, exhaust and the like. I'm not sure that a cam is such a good idea for a daily driver as they have a significant trade off. They all provide more power at higher revs, true. The stock cams, by the way, are tuned for a power peak at 4500rpm or so. But, moving this peak much higher with a cam runs you right up against the 6200 rpm fuel cutoff dictated by the Engine Computer while compromising low rpm power. Seems like you're going to end up with a very annoying car to drive. No power down low, and as soon as it starts to get into it's power band, there's the cutoff. (Turbos are a different story completely so don't flame me for misinformation)
Increasing the volumetric efficiency of the head seems to offer the most benefit without side effect. Porting a head simply allows it to suck in as much air as possible without significantly changing it's power curve. A well done valve job will increase compression slightly by eliminating blow-by around the valve seats. Several companies do this. Swedish Dynamics and SPG9 seem to have the most experience.
You should already have the 2.5" Catalytic converter, same as the turbos, so you can install any turbo exhaust. (You may want to take a look at this as some later cats were fitted with a reduction pipe that connected to a normal 2" exhaust.) I have SPG9s stainless steel exhaust which is very well made. I decided against a header even though they are the best way to go, because there are none available that I thought were made well enough. The larger down pipe is close enough, and lasts for ever.
An Air intake kit that eliminates the big boxy air filter housing.
I've just ordered an aluminum flywheel that should produce an engine that spins up faster. No increase in power will result, or if any a very small amount, but the engine will respond to the throttle faster.
Hope this ramble helps:
Simon
