Hi all,
The wastegate actuator was becoming weak on my 87 900 turbo, so I had an MBC inline to the APC solenoid to essentially raise base boost. I felt this was a bit of a hack job, so I purchased a new Turbonetics 9 psi wastegate actuator. Installed with great results at first, then after a day or so I noticed a severe cutting of boost around 8-9 PSI. The car would surge and buck, and the boost would bounce around quickly from 7 to 9 PSI. Also at light throttle with load (up hills, etc) at positive boost the car will do the same. This happens whether or not APC is connected.
At this point I removed the new actuator and reinstalled the original, only to find the problem still there. Disconnecting the W hose does nothing, no crazy boost overshoot. After several nights of testing "the obvious" (cap, rotor, distributor, coil, plugs, wires, etc etc etc) we've narrowed it down to the wastegate. We've ruled out anything APC related, and electrical.
Tonight we wired the wg shut as best as we could with the actuator connected(still a bit of play in the wire) and went for a drive. The result: same phenomenon, but at a higher psi! This time the fluctuation started around 13 psi.
So my question is: it seems like the wastegate door is blowing open somehow? Can this happen? If so, how would it happen with a brand new 9psi (Read: stiff spring!) actuator? Is it possible the door has come loose from the hinge, or some other explanation? Has anyone ever heard of this happening, this severe? And most importantly, what's the fix?
Thanks for reading, all.
