I figure the only people with Megasquirt experience on this site hang out here, so here goes:
So during an engine team meeting tonight, my Formula SAE team has decided to go ahead and use Megasquirt to run our engine, and I have some questions for those of you who have converted Saabs to MS....
Background:
Our car this year will be using a 450cc single cylinder engine from a Suzuki LT-R450 race quad, 11.5:1 compression, titanium valves, 5 valves/cyl, DOHC (with one cute little lobe on each shaft).
In addition, we are going to run the car on E85 (allowed fuels for the competition are 94, 100, or E85. Our school is big on renewable energy, and we feel strongly that supporting this area of research is important from a scientific standpoint, even if there are some drawbacks [and some benefits] to using this fuel). So we have to drastically alter stock fuel and ignition maps.
The quad comes equipped as of last year with fuel injection, however it uses a capacitive discharge ignition, which according to our engine lead's research, MS hates CD ignitions. So we are looking into using MS to trigger:
1) Aftermarket ignition system
2) Much more cost effective, junkyard ignition parts from some European car. BMW, Saab, Volvo, Audi, etc. all came with similar Bosch ignition setups.
Here is where I need help: who is using MSnS-E to control ignition? Am I right in assuming (on a C900) that you use the spark impulse from MS, into the ignition amplifier in the driver's fenderwell, to fire the coil?
I have no problem implementing a crank trigger wheel, as the project is all about completely custom hardware anyway, but our engine guy with experience with MS transferred schools the beginning of this quarter, and we are having trouble decoding all the info we need to get this engine running, what we need to buy, etc. My engine guy is feeling out his BMW forums with similar questions. Competition is in middle of June.
SUMMARY:
So if anyone is using MSnS-E to control spark, could you get in touch with me to discuss how it is wired up?
Best,
Drew
