Its possible to have the a/f within safe limits and still have too high of egt's and damage the engine. Timing plays a big part in egt's and the amount of boost and even though a good wide-band a/f gage is helpful, its still possible to damage your engine by having an ok or safe a/f range and still have too high of egt's and you really need both to know what is going on or if you only wanted one, egt would be the safer parameter to monitor!
