thanks jak. this will occur on the exhaust cam naturally when holding it with a wrench and tightening the 14 mm bolt but as far as i can tell it doesnt work on the intake cam because you have to hold the intake cam CCW as well when tightening the 14 mm bolt which retards the intake cam, and tightening the 14 mm bolt will spin the sprocket clockwise. i cant figure out any other way to do it... ?
by the way on subsequent try i got the marks lined up with no slack between sprockets - i turned the engine clockwise to 20 degrees, then CCW to zero and then put a pair of vice grips on the flywheel starter ring butted up against a block protrusion to prevent it from turning when i pulled CCW on the cams when tightening the sprockets to them.
