Ouch. Over how many years and engines have he seen those 4?
The parts aren't too expensive over here (OEM equivalent). About 540 USD for a kit including all parts, sprockets etc for both timing and balance chain. My main problem is the labor cost (which increase a lot if I can't get it done with the engine in car and just dropping the pan). Unfortunately I have neither the time nor facilities/tools to do it myself at the moment.
Thing is, the engine has gone over 200k miles without having been opened and I've been thinking of either doing a complete rebuild or getting a newer used B234R engine (which are fairly cheap to get just across the border in Sweden) to tune to ~350HP in less than a year. So any repairs now are just to keep the current engine (B204) running for the next 6 months or so.
I've searched a big swedish Saab forum and have found lots and lots of people who've just removed the chain, but not one account of anyone having engine failure because of leaving the tensioner "as is". I'm not saying there isn't a risk, but it seems like it's pretty low and one I'm willing to take.
