Obviously, the computer cannot generate a real world timeslip. However, what the computer CAN generate is a perfect world timeslip. This to me is a better indicator of a car's capability than some guy's first trip to the dragstrip where he thinks he's John Force because he finally gets his 60ft time down to 2.3 sec. I'm certain the dyno throws SOMETHING in for drag. It likely assumes excellent traction as well. However, based on the trap speed of this slip, it is not assuming a pro-stock launch and short time. As a matter of fact, based on his 1/8 mile time, I would guess the computer is giving him about a 2.0 sec flat 60 ft time. Maybe a 1.9. That IS do-able even in a front wheel drive Saab and without drag radials. The truth is that a good "dyno time slip" would probably be a much better real world measurement of a car's capabilities than a track slip. The driver part of the equation is eliminated, leaving you with the car's outright capabilities. The right driver can make a HUGE difference. Several years ago, GM High Tech Performance took a few cars to the strip for some testing with an NHRA pro driver. They took the SAME Press Pool, already beat on, 1999 Camaro Z28 tested by Car and Driver and put the guy behind the wheel. He turned a whole string of high 12 sec passess with his best being a 12.89 at 108MPH. Car and Driver, 13.4 at 104. Half a second and 4 MPH is a big gap boys. At that trap speed it would be about 5-6 car lenghts. It was the SAME CAR and it's not like the guys who test for Car and Driver are any pack of newbies. I've been watching some of the slips that are posted here on the forum and with the exception of John Williams who has spent enough time at the track to learn what it takes to launch his beast, most of them have strong traps and poor ETs that don't match the trap speed indicated power to weight. IE, they could be piloted to a faster ET with the power they are making. Practice makes perfect my friends! I'm not debating the ability of the car to run a 12.1 at 116 MPH nor am I confirming it. Just some things to think about.
