Hey everybody:
You can usually find me on the 9-5 board, but it's time I put some teeth into my 9-5 base 2.3LPT (170hp). The car was built in 1998, and apparently was the 204th 9-5 to come off the assembly line. As much as I'd like an ECU upgrade, given the age of the car, that's probably not the best way to go (though I'm open to persuasive arguments!).
I prefer a quick car over a fast one, so a Taliaferro suspension upgrade purchase is in the works... but I was hoping to get a little more power from the engine without the stress that a high-po ECU will put on it. I know it won't do that much on its own, but I was thinking of a more free-flowing exhaust. Problem is, I've heard WAY too many conflicting arguments and advertising BS on this subject, so I'm turning to this board. If I go forth with this project, it will have to be in stages, as finances allow. Here's what I'd like to know:
1. What is the proper sequence, downpipe or muffler first?
2. Will installing this first part (whichever one it is) and delaying the installation of the next part until the next paycheck negatively affect the car in any way?
3. Will the car need a diagnostic tune after this performance exhaust is installed?
I really don't give two monkeys about the sound of the exhaust (though I personally wouldn't want a too-aggressive exhaust note on a car with a wimpier oputput as this); it's the boost in performance --however minor-- I'm gunning for.
Sorry in advance for the newbie questions; I got the car just last year, and I'm kind of new at this performance thing.
Cheers,
G
