Welded Wheels

I would be very wary of welded wheels, please be very careful, and make sure you inspect them often, especially since a crack in one of the beads would just travel all the way around the weld, and the two halves would separate. I second the diamond gusseting idea, but that might make them hard to balance.
Remember that the weight of the car pressing on the two tire beads will tend to put that weld into tension, which is not how we want welds to be loaded, we want them in shear. Stay safe. Should be rediculous though!
Second, do we use plexi, or lexan for lightened windows? I think I may have seen both, but you got me thinking, and now I can't remember!
