If you're not comfortable doing a head gasket then you probably don't want to try to add a turbo to an NA car...but of course there's no better way to learn too!
Guys have done it, but really, to take full advantage of going through the hassle of adding a turbo, you might as well swap the whole engine to get the lower compression ratio. The effective compression ratio that you can run, engine CR+boost will be limited by the type/octane of fuel that you have available. A high compression NA engine isn't really the best place to start for building a turbo car IMO.
Because you're octane limited, you can't really run a lot of boost on an NA engine anyway and expect it to last real long, possibly with a really good mappable water injection system...but that's another issue entirely. And if you're running low boost, then why bother going through the hassle anyway?
