heres a few things i tried on my old N/A that helped,
make sure everything is well tuned and fuctioning perfectly. clean all
your electrical connections and grounds. replace all your vacuum lines.
its amazing what a bunch of simple cheap fixes will do to bring back a
few HP to a car that is nearly two decades old.
open up airflow from front to back. I went with the K+N, a high flow
cat and the Swedish Dynamics exhaust off my old turbo. i gained a few
noticeable HP there, but not a lot. i think its actually a little too
free flowing, and could scavenge a little better with more back pressure.
it did make a noticable difference, it is however VERY LOUD (hence my nick)
get good plugs and wires. clean/replace alternator and battery. definately
swap out the distributor cap and rotor. check the timing. replace the
timing chain tensioner, and chain if needed.
next step would be the more expensive stuff. port and polish the heads,
overbore the cylinders and get some performance pistons and hardware.
go for a big bore throttle body (or bore yours out) and larger injectors.
custom ground cams would also help a good bit here.
i've even heard of people removing the fuel cutout for a higher redline,
and replacing the valves and springs with more durable versions (solid?)
when you get this far, a better transmission (search for "chillcast gears")
and Limited Slip Differential may be called for.
then theres the LPT. that would be the biggest HP gain of all.
i'm sure some of this sounds basic, but if you try to make the engine
produce more power without first making it bulletproof, it will fail.
i finished the suspension (bilstein HD's, all poly, SPG springs) on my
4door, rebuilt transmission, built the exhaust and got a few steps into
making it fast when something let go in the bottom end and seized the
whole thing :P after battling wiring demons for the past month with
this new engine it now runs again, but i won't try to get more HP
out of it until i can overhaul the whole thing.
it will never be as fast as my SPG, but its still darn fun to drive.
