You have it wrong.. The bore on those 2.1s was the difference.
There are two factory cranks 90mm and 78mm. Both with benefits and weaknesses. Tradeoffs for piston speed, tdc dwell time etc depending on rod length and other factors.
Bore x Stroke Displacement
93x90 = 2.445 Have a few of these, requires unique headgasket
90x90 = 2.290 Std 2.3L versions
90x78 = 1.984 Std 2.0 L versiosn
93x78 = 2.119 "Max bore" 2.0 crank.
Larger bore helps with flow by unshrouding the valves but also the larger bore is more susceptible to knock with the changed quench area.
Yes we have done lots of unique custom Saab pistons as a JE dealer. ;) Ex a 93mm B235 pistons with cutouts like on the B204 for larger valves..
You really have to look at the project goals and the entire picture to make sure you end up where you want to be.
