OEM ign power is not bad. MSD, Jacobs, etc, can give a bit more ... usually need to upgrade coil too.
MSD also offers retard control as stand alone 'BTM' box, or with a high power ign'n as a single '6A-BTM' box. See link for more info, Jeff used 6A-BTM.
The biggest improvement for my 8VT was just the BTM timing changes, I have the separate 6A box too. The spg9-AID is a simple dist'r actuator, based on my work wth the BTM. SPG9.com has a simple explanation of timing changes, and my more detailed info is at Jeff's.
Porting and/or cams lessen the percieved improvements from these timing changes.
