An aside:
With mono-tube or conventional twin-tube one-way adjustable dampers, the rebound adjustment will always have some influence on bump damping as well. It's a byproduct of the way inexpensive dampers pass fluid through the piston orifices.
What makes really expensive dampers so expensive is that it's very difficult to affect damping in only one shaft direction and/or speed range. It takes many more parts and higher tolerance machining to achieve that.
The best example is the Ohlins / Cane Creek externally valved racing dampers, where the fluid orifices are completely outside the body of the shock, and the piston is completely solid. See below.
The technology was invented by Ohlins, but Cane Creek licenses it for use in their 'Double-Barrel' mountain bike dampers, but it's basically the same. Cane Creek has a better explanation of the internals of the damper on their site, so that's what's linked below.
Best,
Drew
