I was just asking about J2534 because it's the newer universal re-programming scheme for newer cars, it's just the process to 'update' the software, and unless you were going to do any re-programming, or buy a service subscription with software updates you don't necessarily need the J2534 capability. In fact, it usually makes the scan tools much more expensive to have that capability, and I've only seen professional level tools comply with it anyway.

Just because the tool has CANbus achitecture doesn't necessarily mean you will be able to read the other system's trouble codes.

Hopefully someone else chimes in who has experience with one of the cheaper tools which will communicate with the other subsystems.

CANbus is used in lots and lots of different settings, computer networking, telecommunication, and a comm scheme for some cars.

What lets the tool communicate with the different subsystems through the bus will depend on the software support the device has (I believe).

If you can pony up the money, you can get used Tech2's for around $1k now, and I'm sure you could arrange to get one loaded with Saab software already (or find someone with a TIS subscription to help you get it), that would be the most surefire way, and you would be able to offer local diagnostic service to other Saab owners.

And since all GM vehicles use the Tech2 as well, you're pretty much garaunteed that you could get your invenstment back in full in a few years. They pop up on eBay and Craigslist periodically, maybe call up closing dealers and see how they will go about selling off their tools, that's where we've got some of our new equipment. The design of the tool is nearly 15 years old, the new software is what gives it all the programming and comm. ability, and that's the tool that a Saab dealer would use for diagnostics and all programming.
