Dumb Plug Wire Question

Finally replaced some Bosch plug wires with an OEM set from Sobstory and discovered the wiring pattern on the distributor cap doesn't match the locations shown in the Bentley manual (car new to me since November).
Bentley shows No. 4 adjacent to the distributor diaphram. No. 1 is 180 degrees from No. 4 (directly across). My 87 SPG is wired with No. 1 adjacent to the diaphram instead of No. 4. Rest are otherwise in the same sequence around the cap as in Bentley.
Where is No. 1 on the cap? If Bentley is right, then I'm amazed that the engine runs just fine with No. 1 where No. 4 goes, and vis versa, and No. 2 where No. 3 goes, and vise versa (as though cap rotated 180 degrees). You can even set the timing to 16 BTDC, or more if you prefer.
Thoughts appreciated.
