but this is not typical, + bmep Posted by Kevin K [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: boost, Richard Miller, Fri, 1 Jun 2001 16:16:47 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When extra boost is dialed in, amm/cis-flapper/speed-density-info picks up that air flow is higher, and provides more fuel, for more combustion and much higher pressure increase than just incremental boost pressure increase. And this adds to normal peak pressure, not just bmep.
bmep does not squish pistons, peak pressure can, and not just from detonation. bmep is a low, averaged fictional pressure needed to create torque at some rpm. It is roughly pressure applied to 1/2 the pistons in a 4-stroke, for one half rev, with an average of 60% of crank arm length applied for moment arm to full piston area. Time aveage'd torque would be close to bmep.
detonation can cause damage, but so can normal peak pressure. bmep is just a few hundred psi, but peak pressures near top of stroke can be 1000 or more, with no detonation.
