My opinion is the only way that you will realize the full potential of any internal engine modifications is to use an aftermarket ECU.
I'm not really seeing the need for a staged injection system on an OG 900 street car. Other SAAB's that may have drivelines that could handle 400+ HP, could benifit though.
I am finding that just to get in the really high HP ranges, you are going to need large injectors, much larger than are normally spoken of on this board. The 550 cc injectors Eric Z. chose are probably in the ball park, I just hope that he went the low impedence route. A staged system would work well and you could use high impedence injectors, but I just feel all the extra plumbing and programing hassles are not worth the effort unless you are going for 350 HP+ and have the driveline to handle it.
I'm using 440 cc injectors with a 3 bar FPR right now and can see that I will probably be needing more fuel than these can flow in the near future. I might try a RRFPR, this would be trickier to program for, but not real difficult or I may change over to a low impedence system, all I need is the injector driver and the injectors. I feel that the 440's are pushing the limit for high impedence injectors, if a good idle is important to you, it is to me in a street car.
It's a simple choice for me now, an aftermarket ECU is the only way to go. Even on a totally stock motor, the difference is comparable to an upgraded T3 with the 60 cold wheel. The ECU with high flow injectors compares to adding a T3/T4 turbo. Both these add on modifications will not realize their full potential until you can control the engine management. Remember also that you get rid of the 6200 RPM redline and the AMM restriction. What I really like is that the system can grow with any internal engine modifications that you make.
The math is pretty simple really, my first suggestion now, for any one that really wants to have a performance motor for an OG 900 is to get an aftermarket ECU, spend $12-1500 there, you have to buy injectors anyway, right! So, you've spent $1800 and are now where you'd be with a T3/T4 turbo, high end APC, RRFPR, AID/MSD BTM and have a programmable system that will grow with you.
I like my SDS system, price and ease of programming was my main reason for choosing their system. Also they are they only ones that would answer my questions and had an informative website. My warm up isn't as good as stock now that I've changed to the 440cc injectors (I've made my own fast idle system to get me through that part, wish I had gotten that option though), but after warmup, drivability is as good as stock, my plugs are the right color now, boost is up and the motor runs great.
p.s. can you say 70+ mph in second gear
