Exhaust pipe size (dia.)

What size dia. pipe should be used on a 85 900T? I have done some fluids calcs and come up with 1.5" (@5000 rpm) given that the engine exhausts 1 litre of gas per revolution and that 76.2 m/s (250 ft/s) is the recommended velocity for exhaust gas. Why use big dia. pipes? This will surely only result in lower gas speeds and thus higher back pressure?
