What are the demands on the motor? Temperature, use, speed and mechanical condition all play a part.

I swear by synthetic oils for any motor, and I believe they are absolutely essential in turbocharged applications. I've run RedLine oil and MTL in the motor and tranny of my 87 SPG for ten years, almost since I got her. I have well over 200k on the original motor, gearbox and turbo. In a three-thousand mile change interval, I will add less than one quart of oil, and much of that is due of a few small drips and leaks.

Unless you put track time on the car, temperature may be your biggest variable. In Arizona, with daily summer temps over 110 F for weeks at a time, I ran 10w-40 in summer and 5-30 winter; in Minnesota, I run 5-30 year-round. Applications for racing will require thicker oil. Be very, very skeptical of any oil that promises to provide extremely wide ranges of viscosity (ie 5w-50): maybe they can do this without compromise, but then again, maybe they can't. We all have to compromise on some things... but choose which carefully.

A major benefit of synthetics is that while filters must be changed as often as dino oil, the oil itself needs to be changed only every 12 to 15,000 miles... a significant savings of time and that much less oil to be recycled.

Some people are concerned that changing a high-mileage oil to synthetic causes leaks. They may be right, for all I know; but it sure protects the motor.

Not all synthetic oils may be created equally; check out http://www.redline.com for their admittedly selfserving statistics on wear, shear protection, viscosity, etc. Others believe in Amsoil. The others? I put MobilOne in my wife's minivan, but never in my Saab.

Others with more engineering knowledge have posted good information in the past; you might consider a search for similar posts.

Good luck.

Jim Watts
