I've done a bit of research on this as I'm planning on building a 99 rally car - I'll never get rid of my SPG!! :)
Anyway, it really depends on which 99 you get. A 2 door coupe, earlier '70s, weighs in around 2200-2300 curb weight, IIRC. A 3 door hatch, turbo (but it'd be sacrilige IMO to put a 16vT into a '78 99T) is nearly as heavy as a c900 3d.
And I think you are right about the engines too. They always got progressively lighter IIRC. Also easier to service a 16v from what I gather, especially regarding water pumps. But I'm not a 99 or a B motor expert, but they are out there...
I guess the biggest physical mods required are the bump in the firewall (my mechanics built a 'box' with a removable cover for service issues in their old 99 16vT ice racer) and fabricating up an engine mount for the passenger side. Gregg would know, yes? Then you have to transplant all the wiring for the LH and APC...
