turbo motor swap.....

Currently facing a trans rebuild in an 89 base model 900, I'm exploring all my options right now. I know that I can't just bolt up a turbo to my motor, and a whole turbo motor wouldn't be a direct drop in. But could I put a turbo motor in, and just wire and hook it to run with out the turbo portion going? As in having the turbo still bolted to the block, just not active, so that I would have a running car in a weekend, and slowly add parts at my leisure to get the turbo operative?
